Kelly Slater 11 times World Champion! November 4, 2011 – Tags:

In fun conditions on San Francisco’s ocean beach, Kelly Slater has won his 11th world title in the 3rd round against Aussie Daniel Ross in what was a great heat, that Kelly was pushed and beaten until the final minutes. It’s capped pf a great year for Slater, in which by this stage we all new he was going to do it, but seeing it happen is still special and unbelievable all at the same time.
Slater is the youngest and oldest world champion in surfing history and has been on tour for twenty years he has won just about every contest there is to win and is quiet possibly the greatest sporting athlete in the history of any sport worldwide, his feats are literally rivaled by none!
I guess you could ask how long can it go on for, or how many titles he has left in him, i’m really not sure, this year has seen the entry of guys like Julian Wilson, Gabriel Medina, Last year Owen Wright who has taken it to slater for a good part of this year and with Kolohe Andino around the corner of qualifying expect things to get even more interesting! The new era is here and with a quick transition to the tour format and greater variations of manouevres than all of the surfers including Slater i guess you could say that his time maybe coming to an end, not to mention the fact he will be in his forties next year.
Regardless of what happens in the next few years, Slater has re-invented himself time and time again and even if the new school did catch up with him with there crazy punts and variations, they have Kelly to thank anyway. I remember watching a Coke clasic at Narrabeen from the early 90’s possibly ’91’ [don’t quote me on that’ Slater was a fresh face and Darrel Eastlake was doing the call, Slater’s surfing was so far ahead of everyone for where he was getting his board and his body, it had never been seen before, i imagine something like Mp in the 70’s. Darrel was losing his shit over the p.a as no one had really seen much of him in Australia before then, at the time i wasn’t really sure what i was watching but looking back i realize now that he is a special talent who has done all the right things to remain at the top, so regardless of what happens from here i think it’s safe to say his feats will be unmatched in our lifetime and probably the next few after!
