The end of another year! It all comes down to Pipe, with Filipe Toledo, Julian Wilson & Gabriel Medina still in the hunt. Medina has to mess it up pretty badly to lose I would think, but Julian is a Pipemaster & I would love to see him snatch it. The report is for solid surf so fingers crossed. Into the picks now & I have picked Julian & Owen in my top tier for obvious reasons, I am sure Owen would love to tame the beast, were he sustained the chronic injury that would keep him on the sidelines for a long time!
First up, if you got the email about the Portugal contest & it had the France picks in there, very sorry about that! Have a new system which i'm learning & whilst it is going to be better in the long run I am not the most tech savvy user haha! Now, on to the picks, the first tier I have Julian Wilson, what a win in France & putting him back in the conversation, our last Aussie hope for 2018. My second pick is Gabriel Medina if it gets solid & perfect in Portugal expect Gabby to be getting spat out of a few when it matters.
The count down is on for Teahupoo & lets hope we see the guys pulling into some monsters! Straight into the picks & for my top tier I have gone with Julian Wilson & Gabriel Medina for obvious reasons, with John still out injured, I feel like either of these two could take it out.
Getting into the second of the year now & looking forward to Jbay starting. To get straight into the picks for my top tier I have picked Julian Wilson, Im hoping this is his year with no John to worry about & him sitting on top of the ratings. My second pick is Gabriel Medina, there was so many to choose from but I feel like he is ready for another run at the title in this second half of the year!
Already at the Quik Pro stop in France. Hard to say whether the waves are going to be good, but they are dealing with an ordinary run of waves leading up to this time but apparently plenty of sand at La Graviere, which is the usual contest site, so fingers crossed for some chunky french nuggets!
We have crossed the half way mark in our Fantasy Surfer contest & we would like to say thanks for everyone who has been putting there picks in each contest & having some fun with us!
For J Bay, I am sitting in 72nd & have put my picks in already. I have gone with Jordy Smith at J Bay, surely this is a no brainer ? It seems this year though, expect the unexpected. After a bad result last contest look for John John to step it up at J Bay & the same deal with Mick, he loves J Bay & South Africa.
Here we are again, contest number 5 & bogey Brazil out of the way. Congratulations to Adriano Desouza on a much deserved win on his home turf! Once again, I was not able to pick my nose. Congratulations to everyone who did well & continues to do so, we are nearly half way to giving the boards away!
This contest, if your game to listen, I think Owen Wright is going to go a long way in Fiji, John John Florence also. Get Kelly in there also & don't forget Gabriel Medina who has ruled Fiji in recent years also.
I have to say, last night, after seeing yet another surf publication, claim another, watch this clip, this guy is the world's best at the moment call, i thought ok, is this a repetitive , bad attempt at getting readers, or in this day n age, clicks. Now i can't claim to have writing skills like the surf journo's & i am positive i have a lot worse grammar, but that is my point, these guys should be a bit more creative. Big calls with an arguable amount of weight behind them are very see through very quickly.
Julian Wilson & the year 2014 is probably something he would like to forget. Competitively anyway. There is still one contest to go & obviously the Triple Crown, so there is a chance to salvage something on the contest scene & as a fellow Sunny Coaster, i want to see the man fire up & have some luck go his way. I am pretty sure i watched him take care of Gabriel Medina in the Prime event in Brazil last night round 4 which would have been a little confident boost for him.
What a crazy few events it has been. John John Florence has made everyone forget his average start to the year by pretty much demolishing everyone in his path since Trestles. Except maybe Jordy Smith, who has had him twice in 2 goes, once in the Trestles final & now in the Semis at Portugal. Because of the semi finish for John, his world title race is over, but as Mick has said about himself, his world title years have all started half way through the year before. Perhaps this is what John is doing?
Future surfing World Champions. An interesting thought came to me while talking to a friend the other day about where the surfing world is headed, with the arrival on the scene of guys like John John Florence, Julian Wilson, Gabriel Medina to name a few.
