Current ASP world number three surfer, Joel Parkinson (31, Coolangatta) is preparing to fly to Hawaii to contest the annual Molokai To Oahu Paddleboard World Championships this Sunday, July 29.

With surfing’s ASP World Tour in the middle of a scheduled six-week break, Parkinson seized the opportunity to live out a long-held dream and compete in the prestigious race, which sees competitors paddle 32 miles across the “Channel of Bones” between the Hawaiian islands of Molokai and Oahu.

Just the sheer magnitude of all the different brands of surf wax to choose from can make your head spin, and often times you just basically close your eyes, reach into the wax box and pick a random bar of wax. More times than naught, you're satisfied with your “choice”. In fact, you convince yourself that the wax you chose is the best because it has sparkles in it (or something like that), and never buy any other brand. Well, I can understand your fear of delving into that vast market of surf wax – let's face it: the days of buying paraffin wax from the chemist are over.

ABOUT 150 surfers in black wetsuits were framed by a vibrant rainbow as they formed a circle in the waters off Alexandra Headland yesterday, to grieve and celebrate the life of Mark Ovenden.

A further 200 mourners lined the rock wall and gathered under a marquee on the beach to watch as his mother Chris scattered her son's ashes just outside his home break, before his surfing mates, friends, colleagues and many others whose lives he touched scattered coloured petals in the waters.

Last year when the Code Red swell was forecast for the Billabong Pro Teahupoo, the best big-wave surfers arrived en masse and charged one of the biggest days of the year. It was a spectacle, and Billabong capitalized on the situation by keeping the cameras rolling, and subsequently marketing the footage.

Webber Wave Pools has recently introduced a new wave pool design to the world of surf parks and artificial wave technology. Their latest design is a crescent shaped wave pool that is capable of producing world class waves at a fraction of the cost of the full size circular wave pools.

The quality of the waves will be the same as any of the other Webber Wave Pool designs and will provide surfers with rides lasting up to 30 seconds. This length of ride is comparable to the maximum ride length of Wavegarden’s pool designs.

Mark "Occy" Occhilupo a former ASP World Champion,and who just recently celebrated his 46th birthday has returned to the ASP World Qualifying Series Competition and has his eyes set on this years Vans Triple Crown of Surfing .

Showing top form and reaching the semi finals at the Telstra Drug Aware Pro in Margaret River WA, Occy showed why he's still a force to reckon with, and possibly gaining some personal satisfaction knowing that maybe a possible shot at another World Title run could be on the cards if he qualifies for the 2013 WCT.
